born in 1980 I grew up in the vast technology, money & empowerment movement of the 80’s and 90’s. As I look back on my life in an attempt to understand how I became so defiant I‘ve come to some really interesting observations. Not one for much of today’s “entertainment“, I prefer the stuff I grew up watching. You know the goood stuff; before all this “reboot” bullshit started, when movies had their own soundtracks and tv series encourged people to be courteous and have respect for themselves.
Anyhow, lately I’ve been binge watching some of my old favorite shows:
golden girls
designing women
murphy brown
cosby
And it wasn’t until now that I realized how under acknowledge these shows were and what a huge impact the female characters had on me as a young woman. All cutting edge for their time, they discussed serious and relevant issues while exemplifying strong and powerful woman that support other women. the Clair huxtable’s, the Jessica bower’s, the Mary Jenkins and the roseanne’s of the tv world came into my house night after night telling me I could have it all, that it’s ok to be strong and independent while still taking pride in what makes us women.
I gotta say I’m pretty grateful for that experience bc it’s just not done that way anymore. I see a society thats slowly reverting back to the over emotional, curious damsel who lands herself in distress and needs to be rescued. Little girls should wear pink and sparkles and use their appearance to get ahead. It’s not empowerment it’s a form of exploitation.
Women throughout time have always divided over home maker and having it all but for a small window in time I got a glimpse of what happens when women take pride in who they are rather then who they were expected to b
